Homeworking - Is It For You?

Homeworking - is it for you?

Home working for mums might seem like a dream come true when the idea suddenly strikes you in the middle of the night. You have young children, money worries and aside from that, you are getting a bit bored just hanging around the house all day with just a toddler for company. Flexible working is not that easy to come by in the current market, and besides that, by the time you factor in nursery fees it is likely that your extra income would soon all be gone and you would be tired all the time and anyway, you would miss the baby and all its milestones. No – working from home part time is definitely the answer!

Come the morning, and you must ask yourself a question. Does being a mum engaged in working from home still sound like a good idea? If it doesn’t, even without a second thought, then don’t do it. Don’t even go there! Jobs for home workers are in the job market and some of them are very tempting, but unless you are totally committed to them, then it can become a millstone around your neck. If you take on a job as a freelancer or as an employee and work from home, you will have deadlines to meet on which your extra income will depend and if you are the type of person who tends to prevaricate, then you will probably not succeed. Obviously, as a mum working from home your children must come first, but you will have to accept that they will occasionally have to wait while you finish what you are doing, so in one sense the children and their own characters are as important as your own. Will they wait patiently or will they trash the lounge? Be honest with yourself when you ask these questions, or your ideas to work for yourself will be dead in the water from the start.

You should also take into account your house and whether it will lend itself to your working from home part time. If you choose to take in home working, possibly a craft related job or clerical work, you have to be sure that you will be able to store the materials and also the finished product. Everyone in the house will be miserable if they spend all their time fighting their way past piles of boxes. If you can’t decide whether to work for yourself, the probably answer is no, you shouldn’t. Although flexible working arrangements and home working, either as a self employment venture or as an employee is in some ways the ideal answer to any mum looking to earn some extra income whilst still looking after her own children in their home environment seems ideal, the reality is that some people and families just don’t have the temperament for it. It is best to be honest with yourself and if it doesn’t seem right at this moment, revisit it in a month or so – things may have changed by then and you will be all set to become Businesswoman of the Year.
